Interested in more than one Translational Data Science internship?

We are posting several projects within this department, each with its own research focus, recruitment team, and selection process. Please take time to explore the available projects and apply to a maximum of two that best match your interests and skills.

If you apply to two, include the project titles in order of preference in both motivation letters , with a brief explanation of your interest in each. This helps our teams understand your preferences throughout the separate selection processes!

The Role

Would you like to turn AI concepts into practical tools used by scientific colleagues? Join a collaborative project between Translational Data Science and the Scientific Documentation and Intelligence (SD&I) department in Utrecht, focused on applying agentic AI to scientific and regulatory writing.

In this internship, you will help design and build an agentic scientific writing toolkit that supports activities such as drafting, structuring, reviewing, and reusing scientific content. The toolkit will combine AI agents with approved source material and human expert review.

Working closely with scientific writers and technical colleagues, you will turn real writing needs into practical prototypes, evaluate their quality and reliability, and help establish standards for traceability, consistency, and responsible AI use in regulatory-document workflows.

This project offers a hands-on opportunity at the intersection of scientific writing, life sciences, and applied AI, with the potential to shape a reusable framework for future regulatory submissions.

We are looking for a highly motivated intern to join this collaborative initiative within the Department of Translational and Quantitative Sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Help integrate AI agents and workflows into the existing Databricks environment and relevant systems, testing how the components work together and documenting their implementation.
  • Collaborate with scientific writers and other stakeholders to map writing workflows and prioritize high-value use cases.
  • Design and prototype agentic LLM workflows for drafting, structuring, formatting, reviewing, and reusing.
  • Build modular agentic components and workflows in Databricks using approved LLM interfaces, reusable prompts, and tools.
  • Develop source-grounded approaches to support accurate and traceable content creation.
  • Create test cases and evaluation methods for factual accuracy, completeness, consistency, writing quality, traceability, and usability.
  • Implement appropriate guardrails and human-in-the-loop review steps for responsible use in a regulated environment.
  • Document the toolkit, workflows, assumptions, limitations, and recommendations for further development.
  • Demonstrate prototypes to scientific writers and other end users, gather feedback, and iteratively improve the solution.
  • Present findings and a development roadmap to the project team and relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a related field at a Dutch university. A biomedical or life sciences background is not required.
  • Available for 7–9 months; a 9-month internship is preferred.
  • An interest in applying AI to practical workflows and a willingness to learn about scientific and regulatory writing through collaboration with subject-matter experts.
  • Familiarity with LLMs, natural language processing, or prompt design; experience with agentic workflows is a plus.
  • Experience with Python and familiarity with Databricks or a comparable cloud data and AI platform is preferred.
  • Strong written English, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with scientific and technical colleagues.

General Information

  • Internship duration: 7-9 months (9 months is preferred).
  • Start date: 1 February or 1 March (fixed start dates aligned with our internship cohorts, so you can join fellow students for onboarding and make the most of the shared learning activities throughout your internship).
  • Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
  • Working arrangement: Full-time, hybrid, with three days onsite and two days working remotely.
