Director Data Science for Target and Product Discovery

The Role

Genmab is currently in search of a Director Data Science for Target and Product Discovery, to be based at our Research and Development center in the Netherlands. We are seeking an experienced and well-informed team lead, capable of facilitating close collaboration between data science, target discovery and product discovery.

Genmab is a fully integrated biotech company with a sharp focus on innovation and a strong drive to do in-house Discovery. In the early target and product space we apply single cell genomics, proteomics, high-throughput screening, and other high dimensional technologies. As data science, we leverage advanced analytics, AI and machine learning and a deep understanding of (immune-)oncology and immunology to further projects focused on new and innovative targets and antibody drug products.

We are in search of an experienced scientist who is motivated to contribute to our scientific and technological progress, who thrives on exploring biological questions and who can lead a team of data scientists to establish novel approaches for mining biological data. The role will include designing and implementing analytics, machine learning and AI technologies, all to enhance our capabilities in knowledge generation, product discovery and -development.

In this role, you and your team will be fully integrated into an international team of top-tier scientists possessing state-of-the-art knowledge on the discovery and development of differentiating novel therapeutic products. Additionally, you will work closely with our centralized data engineering and IT teams to support and shape the data and systems infrastructure needed to enable advanced tools and analytics. As a leader we are looking for someone who can establish strong relationships across the organization, build bridges between disciplines and is an effective communicator to diverse scientific and non-scientific partners.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead a team of data scientists dedicated to the exploration and utilization of target and product biology.

  • You are tasked with creating and implementing a visionary approach for data science activities within the realm of target and product biology, fostering innovation and embracing emerging data science and computational technologies including advances in the AI/ML space.

  • You will liaise closely with our partner departments in product discovery and development, ensuring you have a solid grasp of ongoing projects, priorities, and departmental goals. Your responsibility is to ensure your team's alignment and close relationship with the various stakeholders.

  • You will maintain a hands-on role in several projects, overseeing the design and application of data science, machine learning and other computational approaches, with a focus on analyzing biological target data, genomics, and high-throughput data analysis.

  • You have a comprehensive understanding of the overall goals of the Discovery department and can effectively interpret and communicate your findings and models to teams with diverse scientific expertise.

  • You demonstrate extensive knowledge and proficiency in your projects and collaborations, becoming the primary point of contact for all undertakings within your scope.

  • You formulate a long-term vision that foresees emerging organizational needs, and work collaboratively to transform this vision into tangible projects, including technology evaluation pilots, external partnerships, and research and development advancement efforts.

  • You record scientific findings in patents, publications, and regulatory documents.

Requirements

  • You hold a PhD degree in a field like computational biology, (bio)physics, (bio)informatics, or computational chemistry with a significant emphasis on biology.

  • You have a very strong background in (immune-)oncology.

  • You are a technically and theoretically competent data scientist, capable of designing, evaluating, and adapting algorithms, and choosing the most suitable methodology for each application.

  • Prior experience with biological target analysis, systems biology or other target/product-related computational work is highly preferred.

  • You bring 5-10 years of experience as an independent, post-doctoral scientist in either industry or academia. Biotech industry experience is an advantage.

  • Previous experience in a team leadership role is favored.

  • You have a solid foundation in AI/machine learning and statistics.

  • You possess proficient programming skills, ideally with R/Python, and are experienced in utilizing cloud services for storage and computation.

  • You are proactive and able to develop a vision that anticipates emerging organizational needs, acting to translate this into an array of technology evaluation pilots, external partnership opportunities, and research and development advancement efforts.

  • You are an effective communicator that is capable of collaborating with teams of diverse professional backgrounds, and act as a bridge between computational, basic and applied biology.

  • You utilize your educational skills to train and empower other scientists in the discovery department on computational methods and tools.

  • You have a track record of publishing in high-quality journals and have made notable contributions through public presentations.

  • Your communication skills in English, verbal and written, are excellent.
