GenDx is hiring a

R&D Oncology Intern

Utrecht, Netherlands

GenDx is a global leader in molecular diagnostic laboratory solutions for transplantation and cancer patients. We combine our cutting-edge software solutions, reagents for DNA/RNA sequencing-based diagnostic strategies with our excellent customer support including a comprehensive education program. Our products are sold all over the world through direct sales and distributors. GenDx, part of the Eurobio Scientific Group since 2022, is headquartered at Utrecht Science Park in The Netherlands.

With a highly educated and motivated team of over 200 people, we contribute to the quality of life and survival chances of transplant patients. Do you want to be part of an innovative company that offers ample time for development?

We offer a challenging internship (BASc, BSc, or MSc level) in the R&D Oncology team.

About the project:
More and more human cancers are being associated with oncogenic viruses. These now include HPV, EBV, HBV, HCV, Merkel cell polyomavirus, KSHV/HHV-8 and HTLV-1. However, detecting a virus is not automatically equivalent to detecting cancer. For a diagnostic kit to be clinically meaningful, the assay should detect a tumor-linked viral or host molecular signal, not just infection, exposure or viral carriage.
GenDx has strong expertise in high-confidence molecular diagnostics, sequencing workflows and trans-plantation-related testing. This creates a potential opportunity to explore virus-associated oncology diagnostics in areas where tumor attribution, recurrence monitoring, transplant-related risk, or immune-context interpretation are clinically relevant.
This project will start with a broad bioinformatic and clinical scoping phase across multiple onco-genic viruses and cancer types. The project will then focus on one or two selected opportunities for wet-lab feasibility testing, with particular attention to assay concepts that could plausibly become a GenDx-compatible diagnostic product.

Requirements:

  • Education: HBO (BASc) or WO (BSc or MSc) in biology, biology and medical lab research (MBL), life sciences, medical biology, or molecular biology.
  • Availability: Fom February 2027, for at least 5-6 months, fulltime (40 hours/week).
  • Skills: DNA/RNA techniques, preferably also bio-informatics.
  • Commuting distance from our Utrecht office during the internship period.
