Intern, Translational Medicine and Research Lab (Project: Antibody Therapeutics and Tumor Immunology)

Utrecht, Netherlands

At Genmab, we are dedicated to building extra[not]ordinary® futures, together, by developing antibody products and groundbreaking, knock-your-socks-off KYSO antibody medicines® that change lives and the future of cancer treatment and serious diseases. We strive to create, champion and maintain a global workplace where individuals’ unique contributions are valued and drive innovative solutions to meet the needs of our patients, care partners, families and employees.

Our people are compassionate, candid, and purposeful, and our business is innovative and rooted in science. We believe that being proudly authentic and determined to be our best is essential to fulfilling our purpose. Yes, our work is incredibly serious and impactful, but we have big ambitions, bring a ton of care to pursuing them, and have a lot of fun while doing so.

Does this inspire you and feel like a fit? Then we would love to have you join us!

The Role

How do antibody therapeutics affect the interactions between cancer cells and the immune system? What can we learn from these interactions to better understand why a treatment works, or why tumors resist it?

Join our Translational Medicine and Research Lab within the Precision Medicine department to explore questions like these. In this lab-based internship, you will contribute to preclinical research into novel antibody therapeutics while developing your experimental skills and scientific thinking.

Antibody-based treatments, including antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and bispecific antibodies, offer different ways to target cancer. Understanding how these therapies affect tumor cells and their surrounding immune environment is an important part of investigating their potential. Our lab uses in vitro models and cellular assays to explore these effects and help inform further research.

Your project will take shape through discussions with you. The exact research question and experimental approach have not yet been finalized. Together with your supervisor, you will define a project that brings together the team’s research priorities, your scientific interests, and your university’s learning objectives, within the time and resources available. The broader focus will be on antibody therapeutics and tumor immunology, with room for you to contribute ideas as the project develops.

Under the guidance of a Preclinical Scientist or Principal Research Associate, you will gain experience across the research process: exploring the literature, planning experiments, interpreting results, and discussing what to investigate next.

Responsibilities

Depending on the final project scope, you will:

  • Help develop and apply in vitro models to investigate how antibody-based therapeutics influence tumor cells, immune cells, and their interactions.
  • Build hands-on experience with relevant techniques, which may include cell culture, flow cytometry, live-cell imaging, and functional assays such as cell viability or cytotoxicity assays.
  • Work with your supervisor to design, plan, and carry out experiments, taking increasing ownership as your confidence and skills develop.
  • Use emerging results and scientific literature to propose follow-up experiments and contribute ideas during research discussions.
  • Document your work carefully, analyze experimental data, and consider what your findings tell us, including their limitations.
  • Share your results with the team and learn to communicate scientific findings clearly.
  • Explore new methods, ask questions, and work with colleagues to troubleshoot experimental challenges.

Requirements

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree at a Dutch university in Biomedical Sciences or a related field and will remain enrolled throughout the internship.
  • This internship must be a formal, mandatory component of your degree program required for graduation; we cannot consider candidates who have already graduated or who are seeking an extracurricular internship.
  • You have a solid understanding of immunology, cell biology, and antibody-based therapeutics.
  • You are interested in experimental research and eager to understand the science behind the assays you perform.
  • You can approach data critically, work accurately, and keep clear records of your experiments.
  • You enjoy working with others and are willing to ask for guidance, respond to feedback, and gradually develop independence.
  • You can communicate effectively in English, both in writing and in scientific discussions.

Experience That Would Be Helpful

You do not need to have experience with every technique listed below. We are interested in your scientific foundation, curiosity, and willingness to learn.

  • Previous laboratory experience with cell culture or other standard cellular techniques.
  • Familiarity with flow cytometry, live-cell imaging, or functional cellular assays.
  • Experience using tools such as Excel, GraphPad Prism, or FlowJo to analyze and present data.
  • Experience planning experiments or organizing laboratory work as part of a university research project.

General Intern Information

  • Duration: 7–10 months.
  • Start date: 1 February/1 March.
  • Location: Utrecht, Netherlands.
  • Working arrangement: Full-time, onsite.

What’s Next?

Please submit your CV and motivation letter and complete the relevant application questions. In your motivation letter, tell us what interests you about antibody therapeutics and tumor immunology, which scientific questions spark your curiosity, and what you would like to learn during your internship. Please also include your availability, preferred internship duration, and any key requirements from your university.
