QA Food Safety Engineer – Abbott Laboratories Zwolle


Are you passionate about food safety, hygiene standards, and creating a safe production environment? At Abbott in Zwolle, we are looking for a QA Food Safety Engineer who ensures that our facility meets the highest food safety requirements. You will support essential programs such as sanitation, environmental monitoring, pest control, and prerequisite programs, and you will play a key role in maintaining a compliant and safe production environment.

What will you do?

Food Safety & Prerequisite Programs

  • Support the development and daily follow‑up of PRPs (Prerequisite Programs) and OPRPs (Operational PRPs) to ensure essential food safety controls are in place.
  • Work closely with Facility Supervisors, Operations, and the Sanitation team to maintain strong Environmental Monitoring and Pest Control performance.
  • Assist in identifying food safety risks during construction or major maintenance activities and help implement control measures.

Sanitation & Hygiene

  • Contribute to the continuous development of the sanitation master plan , ensuring compliance with EU, national, and internal food safety standards.
  • Conduct sanitation and hygiene condition checks, report findings, and support CAPA follow‑up and verification testing.
  • Help monitor compliance with the master cleaning schedule and support good practices related to cGMP.
  • Maintain and update Sanitation SOPs (SSOPs) for equipment cleaning, with attention to efficient water and air usage.

Data Review & Compliance

  • Perform basic trend analysis on environmental sample results , identify deviations, and support corrective action activities.
  • Ensure proper implementation of safety measures related to sanitation, including PPE usage, correct chemical handling, and MSDS record maintenance.
  • Support compliance with EU & FDA regulations , industry standards, and internal company procedures.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Build strong working relationships with colleagues, contractors, and vendors to support smooth daily operations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities by collecting data, sharing observations, and supporting food safety‑related initiatives.
  • Participate in food safety projects as a team member, assisting with planning, follow‑up, and documentation.

What do you bring?

  • BSc degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Food Technology , or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of food safety or quality systems (HACCP, GMP, PRPs); internship or entry‑level experience is welcomed.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing or food production environment (internships also considered).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • A proactive attitude and eagerness to grow within food safety, sanitation, and compliance.
