Byondis is hiring a

Internship “Bioinformatic workflow for ‘cell painting’ assay”

Nijmegen, Netherlands

Byondis is an independent Dutch biopharmaceutical company, based in Nijmegen, that focuses on developing innovative medicines against cancer and autoimmune diseases. We are driven by one goal: to develop new treatments to improve the standard of care for patients. We are always seeking to recruit the very best talent. People who think outside the box, highly skilled individuals that want to continually expand their knowledge. Byondis provides a dynamic workplace where all ideas are welcome, teamwork is key and the values of trust, quality, entrepreneurship, integrity and authenticity are of paramount importance.

Your Role

The Bioinformatica department is looking for an HBO/Master level student for an Intership or graduation internship period of 6 months starting September 2025.

One of the steps of pharmaceutical development is to characterize the effect of molecules in cultured cells. Cells alter their shapes, forms and sizes in characteristic and reproducible ways that reflect the biological effect of compounds. ‘Cell painting’ is a microscopy assay for deep phenotyping of cells that captures hundreds of parameters describing the morphology of several cell components. The cell painting assay generates ample data and is quantitative, sensitive and rich in dimensions. At the time being, a bottleneck to the usability of cell painting is the timely data analysis.

Your aim is to build a workflow for analysis, visualization and interpretation for cell painting phenotype data. This implies an understanding of the necessary mathematical transformations, the ability to translate these to biologically meaningful insights and the ability to code user-friendly and insightful visualizations. The workflow should be optimized for high-throughput and with data sharing/data transparency in mind.

Your profile

  • Familiarity with contemporary data science coding (R with tidyverse packages, python)
  • Experience with git version management
  • Affinity to quantitative techniques such as principal component analysis
  • Ability to search and understand scientific literature
  • Background knowledge and interest in cell biology
  • Curiosity for quantitative imaging
  • HBO/Master student

What is in it for you:

  • Gain industry experience in the field of oncology
  • Train assembling data science workflows
  • Practice inter-disciplinary teamwork & collaboration
  • Build presentation and reporting skills
  • Exercise planning, executing work according to a schedule, prioritizing activities
  • Be part of Byondis’ journey to improve patients’ lives
