Why Genmab

Our internship program provides interns with hands-on experience and relevant projects that directly align with our company’s goals. Additionally, we believe our program provides a valuable opportunity to learn, thrive, and build a strong network. We encourage you to review our website to learn why we’re always looking for smart, purpose-led candidates to play a role in our bold, extra[not]ordinary® future.

The Role
Are you excited about the intersection of data science and cancer immunology, looking to make a meaningful impact in the field of antibody therapeutics? Do you want to gain exposure to the strategic design of innovative antibody therapeutics? Keep on reading!

We are looking for a highly motivated intern to join the Translational Medicine team to support the development of a standardized, user-friendly R Shiny application for gene expression analysis in pediatric malignancies. This tool will streamline production of key deliverables needed for health authority interactions and enable exploratory data analyses in a reproducible and scalable manner.

Responsibilities

You will support the foundational development of this platform, contributing to both backend data processing and the creation of the interactive dashboard.

Data Exploration & Integration

  • Analyze and integrate existing, in-housed pediatric datasets
  • Integration with in-housed real-world evidence (RWE) data
  • Identify and mitigate batch effects
  • Enable real time follow-ups / additional analyses, such as exploring mutational data (available in some of the downloaded datasets) and integrating where possible
  • Acquire and integrate emerging pediatrics datasets not yet downloaded by Genmab (e.g., from GEO)

Refine and standardize dataset (RDAP)

  • Apply internal data governance standards for formatting and metadata annotation.

Dashboard Development

  • Prototype a lean, modular R Shiny dashboard with reusable components and an intuitive user interface.
  • Ensure accessibility for non-technical users; gather and incorporate user feedback iteratively.

Comparative Analyses

  • Incorporate pediatric vs. adult (e.g., TCGA) comparisons to identify disease-specific expression trends. These comparisons support EMA's indication-based requirements, enabling direct evaluation between adult and pediatric cohorts when applicable.
  • Collaboration & Deployment
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering to ensure infrastructure compatibility.
  • Support testing, documentation, and scalable deployment.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s/HBO or Master’s degree program at a Dutch university in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
  • Available for a minimum of 6 months.
  • Proficiency in R programming, with a focus on producing clean, standardized, and well-documented code.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics concepts pipelines (e.g., gene expression analyses, batch correction) and handling and manipulating large scale datasets.
  • Experience working with public bioinformatics databases (e.g., GEO, TCGA)
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g. Git)
  • Basic knowledge of translational research in cancer biology; familiarity with pediatric oncology is advantageous.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven creativity, analytical thinking, strong organizational skills, and a collaborative spirit.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

  • Familiarity with the R-Shiny framework.
  • Experience with modular Shiny development (e.g., shinyModules, golem), and interactive plots (e.g., plotly, echarts4r).

General Intern Information

  • Internship duration: 6-8 months.
  • Start date: September 1st or October 1st.
  • Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
  • This is a fulltime onsite internship position.
