J&J Innovative Medicines s recruiting for an Associate Scientist Process Development, Advanced Therapies located in Leiden.

The API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) Process Development department is responsible for the development of scalable, pharmaceutical-grade production processes. Our focus is early development of process steps ranging from cell culturing to purification. We apply our knowledge to a diverse panel of modalities in the Advanced Therapies domain. Novel technologies are used to ensure that the processes are safe, reliable, scalable, and cost-efficient. The developed production processes are transferred into GMP production facilities to produce clinical batches and scaled-up for commercial production. All activities are performed in close collaboration with other departments.

We are looking for a motivated Associate Scientist within the field of process development. Under limited supervision - and as part of a team - you will plan, prepare and execute scientific studies. Typical unit operations include cell culture (both bacterial and mammalian), filtration, chromatography and UF/DF. Experiments may be performed on pilot scale and/or in reduced-scale models. You work accurately and you are a team player with excellent communicational skills. You are able to co-write study plans, reports and collect & interpret the data retrieved from the experiments under the guidance of a responsible scientist. Of course, you have a high standard with respect to Integrity, Quality and Compliance.

Job description

In this role, you contribute to the smooth operation of the activities of the team. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Working with the team to ensuring smooth and timely execution of experiments on lab & pilot scale to meet project demands, this includes managing ordering of raw materials, equipment, planning resources and sample analysis

• Developing and maintaining digital tools to support experimental execution and data flow management

• Translating an experimental design into an execution plan

• Performing experiments at lab scale and/or pilot scale

• Identify improvements and take the initiative to implement these opportunities compromising the execution of scientific experiments

• Ensure and maintain the proper EHS&S and Quality standard of the department

• Support cross departmental collaboration (in particular GMP pilot plant and commercial production facility), ensuring efficient (operational) knowledge sharing and assuring aligned process execution on all scales

Qualifications

• Master of Science (or Bachelor of Applied Science with at least 5 years of relevant working experience) in chemical engineering, microbiology or similar life science related field with several years of hands-on experience (lab and pilot scale)

• Experience with defining studies, writing study plans and reports

• Knowledge of and experience of working with BSL-levels

• Able to work with a high degree of autonomy in the delivery of assigned experimental tasks and activities

• Independently perform routine- and complex process development operations, including cell culture, chromatography and TFF.

• Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and implement solutions.

• Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in data recording. Affinity with data management and automated dataflows

• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
