Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine (JJIM) Research & Development, is recruiting a Senior Statistician to join the Manufacturing Unit within the Discovery and Manufacturing Statistics (DMS) group to be located at Beerse, Belgium, Leiden, the Netherlands and/or Prague, Czechia.
The Manufacturing group within the DMS department, part of the Statistics and Decision Sciences organization at J&J, offers vital statistical support for the design and analysis of manufacturing processes. Their work seamlessly integrates statistical methods with scientific and engineering principles. Their expertise spans a wide range of areas, covering compounds, programs, and technologies throughout all phases of pharmaceutical research and development. The ultimate goal is to ensure the quality, safety, and continuous supply of our portfolio medicines, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide. DMS represents a global team of statisticians located in Beerse (Belgium), Leiden (The Netherlands), Prague (Czechia), High Wycombe (UK), Spring House (PA, USA), Raritan (NJ, USA) and La Jolla, (CA, USA) campuses.
Job Description
The successful candidate will contribute to statistical services in support of manufacturing programs for all therapeutic modalities (small molecules, biologics and advanced therapies). He/she will be incremental in unlocking the power of data for the organization by means of effective AI/ML based data processing applications and digital transformation strategies and will accelerate the impact of data through integrating advanced analytics and AI/ML modelling workflows in our development processes to improve data driven decision-making. In particular, the candidate will contribute to scalable innovative data science applications enabling scientists & engineers to harness the power of data into their research in collaboration within cross-functional teams and with external contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
- LLM Fine-Tuning, Microservices Development, Database Integration, Testing & Deployment of the applications in close collaboration with IT & data science, with a focus on AI/ML techniques.
- Inspire and drive a culture of statistical innovation by showcasing new ways of working through the application of data science solutions and emerging digital technologies.
- Facilitate workshops and training sessions to educate scientists & engineers on data science tools and methodologies.
- Establish and maintain relationships with internal & external partners.
Qualifications
Education:
- Ph.D. in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science or related field, or Master’s degree in these fields with commensurate years of relevant experience
Experience and Skills:
Required
- Foundational knowledge in statistics (predictive modeling, sampling uncertainty)
- Solid understanding of natural language processing (NLP) concepts, including transformer-based models (e.g., BERT, GPT).
- Experience with data preprocessing techniques, including converting unstructured data (e.g., PDF/DOCX) into structured formats.
- Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch for fine-tuning and deploying language models.
- Proficiency in Python, with experience in working with libraries for NLP, vector databases, and microservices development.
- Practical experience with version control systems like Git for collaborative development.
- Awareness of cloud-based solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) for scalable model training and deployment is desirable.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of R and Shiny application development
Other:
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
