Division

As part of the R&D organization of Thermo Fisher Scientific's MSD division, Digital group is committed to bring groundbreaking software solutions to support our customers success.

Our Digital Team is a multi-site group divided over multiple sites in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Bordeaux (France), Hillsboro (US) and Brno (Czech).

The team in Eindhoven consists of around 80 software engineers, responsible for end-user application software for (TEM) Transmission Electron Microscopes and especially around data acquisition and processing.

How will you make an impact?

Transmission electronic microscopes are the most sophisticated laboratory instruments that are used today. Software applications are essential into exploiting all the potential of these microscopes, pushing the limits of current physical technologies. These applications are used by scientists and engineers in life science, material sciences and semiconductor industry, indirectly affecting our life in many aspects. By contributing into these applications, you might help developing better vaccines, new lighter and stronger materials, or more efficient semiconductors.

Examples are automated tomography, single particle acquisition, and our semiconductors automated metrology/measurements at nanometer scale.

Do you know that this application SW was used in the groundbreaking Cryo Electron Microscopy characterization of the COVID19 virus. This helped boost vaccine development in our global battle against this pandemic.

We have an opening for a data scientist to join our team in life sciences, specifically the single particle acquisition workflow. As a member of one of our agile Scrum teams, your primary responsibility will be to structure and improve our current processing pipelines that automate sample quality assessment. The goal is to extend support to the scientific team by continuously automating validation of their experiment results.

You will also support the development of ML/AI solutions within our main data acquisition application (EPU), which is seamlessly integrated with sophisticated algorithms to enable an advanced SPA workflow on Thermo Fisher Scientific's TEM microscopes.

You will work within an established distributed software environment, combining different technologies.

Our current sample optimization pipeline is based on RestNet and needs constant additional training, labelling and validation.

Specific technologies used are Python (PyTorch), Git + Cnvrg.IO as our MLOps pipeline. Our EPU application has an RestAPI in .NET with a Python support library and is further based on .NET.

Algorithms are deployed as Docker on an on-premises Kubernetes cloud.

Your daily activities will consist of a mixture of:

  • Structure and extend the currently existing processing pipeline. This will include versioning, validation, and deployment.
  • Integrate the algorithms within our EPU acquisition application using the OpenAPI that it provides.
  • Extend support towards the scientific team by supporting automation of the validation of their experimental results.
  • Working in a scrum team with different competences daily.
  • Learning TEM microscope domain knowledge, to enable testing the new functionality at the R&D systems and capture specific domain knowledge (requirements).
  • Working together with different software (scrum) teams, also multi-site

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural, technical environment to tackle sophisticated scientific and technical (software) challenges. If you enjoy the development of solutions on top of high-performance systems, this is an excellent opportunity. The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • BSc or MSc degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Artificial Intelligence or a related technical field is typically required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in related environment of software development, data engineering or AI development.
  • Structured working
  • Proficiency in development programming languages like Python and C#/.NET
  • Familiarity with MLOps practices.
  • Advantageous to have experience with Test Automation frameworks, virtualization and containers.
  • Willingness to learn Life Sciences and TEM domain-specific knowledge
  • Strong focus on quality with the ability to pragmatically solve issues when necessary.
  • Experience working in multi-cultural environments.

Personal skills

  • A team player with good communicational skills (both written and verbal) and highly proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills, with the ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts.
  • Value oriented, getting to the essence, setting and acting according to priorities.
  • Result oriented.
  • Proactive and initiative-taking attitude.
  • Curious, fast learning (mostly on the job)
