Motivation for the assignment:
Thermo Fisher Scientific service engineers perform over 500 software updates each year globally. We need to have a standardized and automated way to test microscope health after a service visit & report the results.
Currently, the system health checks are highly dependent on the Field Service Engineer (FSE) and can vary in duration depending on the customer and additional tests requested. Automating the basic system status self-test will increase efficiency, make the system health checks independent of people (customer and FSE), and provide a trackable and visible record of any additional customer requests.
This project aims to develop a series of automatic scripting tests and checks which engineers can execute before and after actions at a customer site to ensure system health and status are acceptable.
Key elements of this assignment:
Develop a software scripted tool that runs a series of system health checks on a microscope & reports results:
- Problem analysis
- Gather SMART requirements from relevant stakeholders
- Software Development of Scripting tool
- UI Development for integration into Microscope SW Suite
- Scalability planning
- Solution documentation
- Regular Stakeholder alignments
- Service Introduction plan creation
Success criteria:
- Efficiency Improvement: The automated self-test of basic system status should significantly increase efficiency by reducing the time required for system health checks after a service visit.
- Independence from People: The system health checks should become independent of both the customer and the FSE, ensuring consistent and reliable results.
- Trackability and Visibility: The tool should produce a report of the results & any additional customer requests for tests, making them trackable and visible to relevant stakeholders.
- Predictability of SW Upgrade Times: The scripted tool should contribute to more predictable software upgrade durations, minimizing surprises and facilitating better planning.
- Solution is accepted by stakeholders
Requirements:
- Preferred Fields of Study: Any Software or IT related study, or technical study with Software/IT skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Demonstrated leadership potential through academic or extracurricular activities
- Professional demeanor and strong work ethic
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Authorization to work in country of employment without sponsorship
- Previous internship experience preferred but not required
- Ability to meet physical requirements specific to role and work environment
- Willingness to learn and apply continuous improvement methodologies
- Commitment to safety, quality and regulatory compliance standards
- Foreign language skills may be required for some international positions
