Role and Department:
Thermo Fisher Scientific is a world-wide company, and the world leader in serving science. In the Analytical Instruments Group, the Material and Structural Analysis Division is looking for a System Architect for our Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM).
Within the Material Sciences R&D department, the Architecture group defines the architecture and design of our Microscopes. The system architects are end-to-end technically responsible for developing innovative, performant and high-quality system platforms with predictable, reproducible, and validated performance that can serve our business and meet customer requests. The system architect translates customers’ needs into products’ roadmap and system requirements, decomposing the requirements towards the functional teams, bringing and maintaining the technical solutions in the field via securing platform architecture thinking. This role is based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The mission
Our mission is to design, manufacture and sell industry leading new type of microscopes enabling our customers to work for instance on new drugs against viruses, new materials for batteries, smaller and smaller semiconductors. Such developments require from us an architecture thinking for improving and / or crafting the performances of our systems. For delivering future product propositions, we look for a professional and passionate candidate who is encouraged by technology and complexity. As a system architect for our High-End TEM products, targeted for our customers from industries and academic world, you will lead technically the developments for one or more products belonging to this product line in materials science. Beyond having to secure the current position of the products in the market, the mission is also to shape and steer the initial development phases for new sub-functions, modules, and options.
Main Responsibilities:
- Build the project definitions in a team with the product manager, project leader and specialists for regular productions as well as non-standard system configurations. Be the technical lead for multi-functional teams
- Translate market requirements and customer needs into system requirements, system architecture, system design
- Optimize system-level performance by means of modeling and / or Design of Experiments
- Support marketing and sales activities in respect to customer support and interactions
- Identify key customer values and define the technology roadmap for the mid-r TEM.
- Maintain product technical roadmap with both the module roadmaps and the Software backlogs
- Seek for R&D efficiency by enhancing re-use of functions from other product lines as well as continuously improve obsolescence removal and prevention
Qualifications:

- Typically requires 8+ years of experience with proven track record of HW and SW design activities
- Within the area of expertise proficiency in concepts, principles and practices is required. Being recognized as a specialist in their field
- A university degree in Engineering, Applied Physics or related field is required
- Extensive knowledge on a broad area of Electron Microscopy related technologies is a preference
- Training such as Design for Six Sigma, or experience with bringing modules from requirements phase to the market is preferred
- Ability to lead interdisciplinary people at the technical level (systems, electrical, mechanical and software engineering) towards delivering a new module.
- Advisor to system engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers and project leaders in R&D
- Knowledgeable about requirement management and model base system engineering tools (JAMA / DOORS / …, Arcadia-Capella / Architect Enterprise/…)
- Proficient in English and preferably strong in local language
