
Senior Scientist – Manufacturing Science & Technology

At Abbott, we are committed to helping people live healthier lives through high‑quality, reliable medicines. We are looking for a Senior Scientist to join our chemical team in Manufacturing Science & Technology (MS&T) team at our Weesp site in the Netherlands .
In this role, you will act as a technical subject matter expert supporting established pharmaceutical products across their lifecycle. You will work closely with manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and external partners to ensure robust processes, compliant operations, and continuous improvement.
This position offers a high level of scientific autonomy and the opportunity to influence manufacturing strategies for products supplied globally.
What you’ll do
- Provide expert technical support to resolve manufacturing and analytical issues for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
- Design, execute, and interpret laboratory and plant‑scale experiments to improve process performance, yields, cost efficiency, and product quality
- Support process scale‑up from laboratory or pilot scale to commercial manufacturing
- Actively contribute to cross‑functional teams during development, tech transfer, commercial launch, and troubleshooting activities
- Prepare, review, and approve high‑quality technical documentation supporting manufacturing, quality investigations, and regulatory submissions
- Collaborate with and oversee external partners such as Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and third‑party manufacturers
- Represent MS&T as a scientific expert in product support and manufacturing workstreams
- Mentor and support the development of junior scientists and share knowledge across teams
- Ensure compliance with GMP, safety standards, and global regulatory requirements (FDA, EMA, ICH)
What you’ll bring
- A scientific degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline with a preference for organic chemistry:
- Bachelor’s degree with 5–8 years of relevant experience, or
- Master’s degree with 3–6 years of experience, or
- PhD / PharmD with 1–3 years of experience
- Strong experience in chemical manufacturing, process development, MS&T, or analytical sciences
- Solid understanding of cGMP environments and CMC requirements
- Proven ability to independently solve complex technical problems
- Experience with process optimization, scale‑up, and technology transfer
- Strong scientific writing skills and the ability to communicate complex data clearly
- A collaborative, proactive mindset and the ability to work effectively in cross‑functional and international teams
- Fluency in English (written and spoken)
