Purpose of the function
The Head of Medical Affairs primary role is the leadership, management, and accountability of the oncology Medical Affairs team in the Netherlands. He/she will ensure the implementation of the local oncology medical affairs strategy(s) to support the medical plan and conduct all relevant medical affairs activities for DSNL portfolio (oncology and hematology) within the proper compliance law, ethical standards and company procedures.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Team leadership
- Recruits, develops and leads a team of MSL and Medical Advisors in line with company strategies, procedures and specifications, in order to enhance individual/team performance and team spirit
- Role models Daiichi Sankyo values and behaviors and comply with internal policies
- Manages operational medical department budgets
- Responsible for planning, execution, sharing of best practices, and insight generation related discussion in order to understand the breadth of insights, potential impact, and to encourage scientific exploration.
- Stimulates the gathering of competitive intelligence to enable effective decision-making, customer engagement and brand performance
- Collaborates with the broader organization – in a seamless and efficient manner.
- Reports to the Country Manager, with a dotted line to MSC Medical Director

- Product/Brand Experts
- Has expertise in and knowledge of products, patient treatment trends, clinical trials and scientific activities within the disease area of Oncology and is expected to continuously update this expertise and knowledge.
- Ensures the local medical affairs team has the right level of expertise to act as medical experts for the affiliate and external partners, and are able to address complex medical questions that require in depth medical knowledge.

- Medical Strategy and Brand Planning
- Supports and actively contributes to the overall organization’s aspiration to deliver the best in market performance and new launches
- Accountable for the Medical Strategy development and execution, implements local strategy for new products from company’s pipeline and key contributor to Brand Strategic Planning
- Collaborates with the co-promotion/Alliance partners and with their respective teams to build and execute the co-created strategy and tactics

- Leads development of an engagement strategy for the Netherlands in alignment with the Market Access, Medical Affairs and Commercial functions and executes seamlessly to drive value
- Proactively monitors and adjust the engagement plan to build scientific knowledge, gather competitive intelligence and enable effective decision-making in achieving the overall objectives
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key external experts, in accordance with the strategy developed by the company to gain insight into treatment patterns, the scientific activities taking place within the Disease Area and the needs of healthcare providers in the Disease Area.
- Ensure that the most appropriate healthcare professionals are selected for involvement in medical activities e.g. advisory boards, clinical trials etc.
- Ensure appropriate responses with accurate scientific data to unsolicited scientific questions from Physicians for Products/Brands are provided
- Presents and represents the established and newly developed evidence as well as Daiichi Sankyo medical-scientific concepts and beliefs with external and internal audiences
- Support delivery of clinical data in the support of health economic/value proposition discussions with payors e.g. advanced budgetary notification.
- Communicate Key External Experts insights about the disease area, unmet medical needs and treatment patterns.
Further Roles and Responsibilities
Education & Experience
Education:
- Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree or advanced scientific training such as Ph.D. or PharmD. with appropriate therapeutic specialty in medical oncology and/or cancer research.
- 5 to 8 years Minimum of 5 years of experience in a comparative position.
- Prior Medical Affairs experience and solid expertise in the three Medical pillars: Scientific engagement, evidence generation and insights generation driven towards optimal access for patients
- Good knowledge of clinical development, clinical trial methodology and regulatory requirements
- Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical business.
