The Role

Can quantitative modeling help reduce the need for animal studies in drug development? While in vitro assays provide valuable mechanistic insights, they do not always fully predict how a therapy will perform in vivo. Animal studies can bridge that gap, but they are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and should only be used where they truly add scientific value.

Within Genmab's Quantitative Translational Pharmacology team, you will contribute to an exciting project that explores how quantitative modeling can help optimize this process. By combining historical preclinical and clinical data, you will investigate whether in vivo tumor growth inhibition studies improve the prediction of efficacious patient exposure compared with an in vitro-only approach. Ultimately, the goal is to support smarter drug development decisions while contributing to the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) by identifying opportunities to reduce or refine the use of animal studies.

During this internship, you will integrate a tumor growth inhibition module into Genmab's translational PBPK/PD modeling framework and work with a diverse range of datasets, including molecular and cellular assays, pharmacokinetic data, tumor growth inhibition studies, and clinical exposure-response data. Your work will contribute to the development of a reusable modeling workflow that can support future discovery projects.

You will become part of an experienced multidisciplinary team where you'll receive guidance while also having the opportunity to work independently. The exact direction of the project can be tailored to your interests and academic background, allowing you to deepen your expertise in quantitative pharmacology within a dynamic biotechnology environment.

Responsibilities

During your internship, you will:

  • Implement a tumor growth inhibition model within Genmab's translational PBPK/PD modeling framework.

  • Compile, curate, and analyze in vitro, preclinical, and clinical datasets to support translational modeling.

  • Compare in vitro-only and combined in vitro/in vivo strategies for predicting efficacious patient exposure.

  • Investigate opportunities to reduce or refine preclinical animal studies through quantitative modeling.

  • Perform exploratory data analyses and evaluate model performance using appropriate diagnostics.

  • Present your findings through clear reports and presentations to colleagues within the team.

Requirements

We're looking for a curious and motivated Master's student who enjoys combining biology, mathematics, and programming to solve complex scientific questions. You also bring:

  • Enrollment in a Master's programme in Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Drug Innovation, Pharmacy, or another relevant discipline at a university in the Netherlands.

  • This internship must be a mandatory component of your degree programme required for graduation. Unfortunately, we cannot consider applications from graduates or students seeking an extracurricular internship.

  • Basic knowledge of cancer biology and/or immunology.

  • Familiarity with PK/PD, PBPK, and/or QSP modeling, including model calibration and evaluation.

  • Experience with programming, preferably in R.

  • An interest in quantitative modeling and translational pharmacology.

  • Strong analytical thinking and a proactive approach to problem solving.

  • Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience with nonlinear mixed-effects modeling or previous industry experience is considered an advantage but is not required.

  • Duration: 6-12 months

  • Start date: 1 November

  • Location: Utrecht, the Netherlands

  • Working pattern: Hybrid (3 days in the office, 2 days working from home)


The proposed gross annual/monthly base salary range for this position, in the primary location, based on a full time schedule is:

EUR750,00---750,00


The final salary offer will depend on several factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for additional forms of compensation, such as discretionary bonuses and long-term incentives.
