EVM Department:
The Engineering, Validation & Maintenance (EVM) department is a motivated, dynamic team that provides technical support for utilities, production and laboratory areas, and all associated equipment at the Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine R&D site (JJIMRD) in Leiden.
We operate in an ambitious R&D environment and contribute directly to the development of advanced therapies. Engineering manages a large project portfolio to sustain and improve the existing facility and infrastructure. The Compliance group oversees qualification and validation of GMP‑critical equipment and processes and leads EVM’s quality and safety programs. The maintenance organizations — Utilities & Buildings, Automation, and Equipment — focus on asset maintenance and lifecycle management across the JJIMRD site .
Job Description:
As Manager Engineering you will lead a skilled EVM sub-team delivering technical projects and engineering services in a regulated R&D environment. You will enable high-quality delivery, drive departmental development as a Management Team member, and shape our engineering portfolio management and governance to balance rising business demand with available capacity.
Key responsibilities:

Lead and develop a high-performing team through coaching, recruitment, succession planning, workload management, and promotion of CREDO values.

Define and deliver the technical roadmap aligned to business priorities and capacity.
-
Implement portfolio governance: transparent intake, prioritization, and decision-making that align projects with value, risk, and capacity.

Manage the project portfolio (e.g., EoL systems, lab/clean-room refurbishments, feasibility studies) to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery and required quality.

Diagnose and resolve staffing constraints: develop workforce plans combining hiring, internal mobility, contractors, and outsourcing.

Own CapEx and OpEx forecasting, lead the annual CapEx process, monitor spend, and implement corrective actions.

Ensure compliance with cGMP, EHSS, and Process Excellence standards; manage vendor and contractor relationships.

Drive continuous improvement and digital tool adoption: maintain an improvements backlog, prioritize initiatives by impact and effort, and secure capacity for high‑value improvements that increase project throughput and predictability.

Monitor performance: track portfolio KPIs (timelines, budget, quality) and report to senior leadership.

Business demand currently exceeds capacity. The successful candidate will implement portfolio governance and workforce solutions to restore predictability and direct resources to highest-value work.
Required qualifications & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline.

Proven engineering leadership experience in R&D, laboratory, or manufacturing environments.

Demonstrated experience with portfolio management, CapEx budgeting, and vendor management

Experience with Process Excellence, continuous-improvement methodologies, and project-management tools..

Familiarity with regulatory/quality frameworks (e.g., cGMP, EHSS).

Strong stakeholder management and communication skills; good command of English (written and spoken).
