Job Description:

Scientist, MSAT LM DS Lab – Downstream Processing (DSP) & Materials Science Liaison

J&J Innovative Medicine Supply Chain (IMSC), part of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, is seeking a Scientist for our Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) Lab, located in Leiden, the Netherlands.

The MSAT Bio DS Lab (Manufacturing Science & Technology — BioTherapeutics Drug Substance) is a global hands‑on process lab supporting downstream process robustness, reduced‑scale models, and life‑cycle management for biologics.

The Materials Science team provides technical oversight of raw material readiness, supplier changes, and lifecycle control strategies that protect product quality across commercial manufacturing.

This role is based in the MSAT LM DS Lab in Leiden and will spend the majority of time on downstream process work while maintaining a dotted‑line relationship to the Materials Science team to support material assessments, investigations, and tech‑transfer readiness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Downstream Process Investigations & Optimization:

    • Design, execute, and analyze experiments related to downstream processes, to address complex investigations, optimize step yields and increase robustness and reliability of our LM products.

    • Contribute to the development and implementation of robust and scalable downstream processes (reduced scale models).

    • Troubleshoot process challenges and identify potential improvements.

  • Material Science support (dotted line):

o Participate in raw material readiness assessments, BOM reviews and supplier change impact analyses.

o Support root‑cause investigations, CAPA development and material risk assessments affecting DSP.

o Contribute materials input to change controls, regulatory impact assessments and tech transfers.

  • Data Analysis & Reporting:

    • Analyze experimental data independently and prepare clear and concise reports.

    • Effectively communicate results to colleagues and stakeholders.

  • Collaboration & Communication:

    • Work collaboratively with other members of the MSAT team (both local and global), sharing knowledge and expertise.

    • Effectively communicate with colleagues and stakeholders, providing clear and concise updates on project progress.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Educational Background:

    • Advanced degree (MSc/MBA/PhD) in a relevant field, such as Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience:

    • 4+ years with advanced degree MSc/MBA/Ph.D. or equivalent

    • OR 7+ years of relevant experience and Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

    • Hands-on experience with lab operations pertaining to chromatography, filtration, and process optimization.

  • Technical Skills:

    • In-depth understanding of downstream processes for large molecule drug substances, including chromatography, resins and filtration modes.

    • Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.

    • Familiarity with regulatory guidelines and good manufacturing practices (GMP).

  • Desired Skills:

o Experience with raw material readiness, supplier change assessment or tech transfer to CMOs.

o Strong communication and cross‑functional collaboration skills.

  • Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills:

    • Demonstrated ability to solve complex scientific and technical challenges independently and within a team setting.

    • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to critically evaluate data and draw sound conclusions.
