Intern - Analytical Chemistry - PATS
Job Description
We are looking for a motivated 4th year HBO or MSc Analytical Chemistry student! Do you want to know what it's like to be part of one of the largest multinational companies in the pharmaceutical industry? We offer an internship opportunity within our Global PATS Material Science and Characterization group.
Intern – Analytical Chemistry – Global PATS
Welcome to our team
The PATS department is an essential hub in our organization. This department is focused on physicochemical analytics and features many state of the art solid state characterization techniques (FTIR, XRPD, TGA, DSC, DVS, SEM, PSD) to investigate the properties of APIs used in veterinary healthcare. The team works closely with other departments within the company to achieve the stated goals.
Your internship assignment
Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are often administered in a solid form; e.g., as a tablet or capsule. To achieve the desired bioavailability of the drug, its rate of dissolution is of great importance. The dissolution rate of a drug product can be affected by many parameters such as the particle size, temperature, pH, presence of excipients, stirring speed, etc. As a baseline, it is valuable to know the dissolution rate of the pure API itself, whilst eliminating as many external parameters as possible: the intrinsic dissolution rate. The intrinsic dissolution rate is defined as the rate of dissolution of a pure API when the surface area, stirring speed, pH and ionic strength of the dissolution medium are kept constant.
The scope of this internship is to introduce intrinsic dissolution testing as an additional characterization tool for APIs. The department features a SOTAX dissolution instrument, and UV-Vis and HPLC instruments for the analysis of the data.
Your responsibilities
-
Perform a background study on the application of intrinsic dissolution as a characterization tool for APIs
-
Introduce intrinsic dissolution testing to the solid state characterization team in an informative presentation
-
Perform initial dissolution tests and analyze the results with e.g., HPLC and UV-Vis
-
Develop a general method for the sample preparation, execution and result interpretation of intrinsic dissolution testing
-
Evaluate the results and suggest adjustments
-
Providing a fresh perspective within the department: your opinion matters!
The described tasks form the basic package and will often be performed independently after a proper training and learning period. These tasks may be supplemented with other projects and/or tasks on your own initiative or at the request of the organization.
What is required
• A 4th year HBO bachelor or master student analytical chemistry
• Familiarity with safely and effectively working in a laboratory environment
• Knowledge about HPLC analysis and/or dissolution • Available for a period of 4 to 6 months for 5 days per week
What we offer
Interning at our company means working together with your team towards health in an international work environment. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with experts and learn from them. In addition, we offer:
• The chance to gain experience in the pharmaceutical industry
• An opportunity to showcase yourself for potential opportunities after your internship period
• A challenging and dynamic work environment with plenty of room for personal development and initiative
