Welcome to our team
The R&D department is an essential hub in our organization. This department is focussing on developing inactivated, live and genetically modified vaccines. The team you will be part of is developing vaccines for the swine industry. The team consists of scientists having extensive knowledge and experience in different fields like virology, biotechnology, microbiology, immunology and veterinary medicine. The team works closely with other departments within the company to achieve the stated goals.

Your internship assignment
As an intern, you will be responsible for developing immunological detection tools for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), which is a very important pathogen for the swine industry. You will also have the opportunity to characterize the available PRRSV-specific monoclonal antibodies in several different assays, including ELISA and immunofluorescent staining of PRRSV-infected cell lines. Developing these tools will help the team to accelerate their efforts to develop new and improved PRRS vaccines.

Your responsibilities
• Planning and running different detection techniques such as immunofluorescence assay (IFA), western blot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and virus neutralization test (VNT)
• Cell culture, including PRRSV infection experiments
• Providing a fresh perspective to the department by sharing your opinion.

• Presenting and reporting the work in a professional way.

The described tasks form the basic package and will often be performed independently after a proper training and learning period. These tasks may be supplemented with other projects and/or tasks on your own initiative or at the request of the organization.

What is required
• Final year HBO student in the field of Life Sciences
• Familiarity with basic virology, molecular biology, and biochemical assays
• Good English communication skills, both written and verbal
• Available for a period of 5 to 6 months for 5 days per week
