Job Description

When you are part of the team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you’ll do important work. You’ll have the opportunity to grow and learn in a culture that empowers your development. We have built an inclusive, global environment that values the power of diverse talent, backgrounds, and experiences to drive speed, efficiency, innovation, and growth.

The division

The Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD) Electron Microscopy (EM) business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries which can ultimately change the world. The MSD EM business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy solutions that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales.

Join us, and you’ll be part of a global community of innovators and researchers who are shaping the future of science and technology.

The Position

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious intern to join our core electron microscopy application development team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, including 4D Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (4D-STEM), Lorentz microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS).

In this role, you will contribute to the processing and analysis of large-scale microscopy datasets and help advance data reconstruction methods for ptychography, as well as strain, phase, orientation, and magnetic mapping. Working alongside experienced scientists and engineers, you will help develop and refine data workflows and algorithms that enable entirely new ways of visualizing and understanding materials at the nanoscale.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of modern technology, data science, and fundamental research—while making meaningful contributions to the future of electron microscopy and materials characterization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and work closely with application development scientists and engineers to test and validate innovative data-processing approaches.
  • Process, analyze, and visualize multidimensional datasets from advanced electron microscopy experiments.
  • Develop and optimize scripts (e.g., in Python, MATLAB, or similar) to automate data analysis and improve computational efficiency.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of next-generation data analysis tools that enhance imaging performance and reveal new physical insights.
  • Document methodologies, summarize results, and communicate findings to multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Strong interest in microscopy, imaging, or scientific instrumentation. Having hands-on experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Python or related computational tools. Experience with MATLAB a plus.
  • Familiarity with image or signal processing and data visualization techniques is an advantage. Background in AI, machine learning, neural networks, deep learning routines for image processing would be very valuable.
  • Creative problem solver with a passion for technology and scientific discovery.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative, innovative environment.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to contribute to the development of world-leading microscopy technologies that drive scientific breakthroughs.
  • Mentorship from experts in microscopy.
  • Experience with real experimental data and advanced analysis pipelines.
  • A dynamic and inspiring international workplace where curiosity, innovation, and excellence are valued.
