The department

The Mechatronics, Thermal & Dynamics Engineering team is one part of the Research and Development organization for Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM). This group is committed to develop breakthrough technologies, modules and software that enable us to deliver innovative TEM microscopes for our demanding markets and customers. We are striving to convert the most promising technological concepts into real products - with the purpose to enable our customers to make the world cleaner, healthier and safer!

The Position

Due to increasing demands on optical resolution, it is essential to continuously minimize the impact of internal and external disturbances on our transmission electron microscopes. The turbo molecular pump (TMP), which plays a crucial role in achieving the high and ultra-high vacuum levels necessary for the optimal performance of transmission electron microscopes, is one of many disturbance sources that can deteriorate image quality of our microscopes.

Significant efforts have been spent to isolate the TMP in a robust way via complex decoupling mechanisms, such as bellows, to reduce the impact of mechanical vibrations on the optical column.

Your assignment is about creating a better understanding of the complex transmission paths of the mechanical vibrations. This would allow us to further improve our ability to predict the impact of the TMP on the image quality, set realistic requirements for the TMP, and to further improve the isolation of the TMP.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will have the following key responsibilities:

· Create improved understanding of the transmission paths of the mechanical vibrations and the isolation thereof via dynamic models

· Verify these models via e.g. transmissibility measurements and (experimental) modal analysis on a representative test set-up.

· Predict the impact of TMP vibrations on the image quality

· Collaborate with a team of engineers covering multiple competences (mechanical, electrical, software, dynamics)

Qualifications

A successful candidate possesses the following combination of education and experience:

· University student in the field of mechanical engineering, dynamics

· Additional work experience in this field is a plus.

· Experience in applied mechanics, FEM and material constitutive behavior is a plus

· Experience with software tools such as Matlab, Simulink, UX and ANSYS or equivalent experience
